Most people tend to move between May and August, making summer the busiest moving season of the year. For adults over 65, however, moving is often less about seasons and school and more about life transitions—retirement, downsizing, moving closer to family, declining health or finding a community that better fits changing lifestyle needs. Because of that, many older adults also choose to relocate during the milder months of spring and fall. Whenever your move happens, it’s wise to review your Medicare coverage before you pack, because a new zip code can sometimes open new plan options—or require changes to your current coverage.

If you have Original Medicare (Part A and Part B)as your primary, your coverage generally travels with you anywhere in the United States, as long as visiting Medicare participating providers. However, moving is still a good time to confirm and plan for your change or continuation of coverage.

If you’re enrolled in Medicare Advantage (Part C), a Part D prescription drug plan, or have a Medigap policy, your move may have a bigger impact. Medicare Advantage and prescription drug plans are often based on local service areas, and moving outside your current coverage area may trigger a Special Enrollment Period, allowing you to choose differently. Provider networks, pharmacy options, premiums, and out-of-pocket costs can vary significantly by zip code, and Medigap premiums or availability will differ by state. Reviewing your coverage well before relocating can help take advantage of any improvements in coverage, prevent interruptions in care and ensure a smoother transition to your new home.
