Turning 65 is a big milestone — and for many, it also means becoming eligible for Medicare. But here’s a little-known fact: if you’re already receiving Social Security benefits when you hit 65, you’ll be automatically enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B. So, if you have work insurance, that is as good as Medicare you can return the card and delay if that makes the most sense. However, if you’ve chosen to delay claiming Social Security (often to maximize future benefits), you must actively sign up for Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period (a seven-month window that starts three months before your 65th birthday) if you do not have coverage with your work or your spouse’s work, that is as good as Medicare.
