The Christmas holiday season is upon us again. Unfortunately this time of year is often filled with stress, worry and over committing ourselves. We will rush out to buy more things for people who already have so many things they can’t even remember what things they wished for and/or received last year. We often push aside all the things we have, and focus on what we hope to get in the future. As a result, we miss the opportunity to be thankful for what, and who, we have in our lives today.
Studies have shown that having an attitude of thankfulness has great benefits. People who focus on things that they are grateful for are more satisfied with their lives as a whole, feel more optimism about the future, and feel considerably more connected with others. They also sleep better each night, and feel more refreshed upon awakening.
There are two things you can do to increase your thankfulness:
- Write down three things you are thankful for every day, either first thing in the morning, or just before bed;
- Tell a spouse, friend, or coworker something you appreciate about them every day. With just a little practice and focus you also can have all of those benefits, and be thankful for them.
