While it may seem like ten, it’s actually only been one year since “Covid” and “pandemic” became part of our daily vocabulary, and “working remotely” and “remote school” a part of our daily lives. If the past year has taught us anything, learning to adapt living space has to be very high on the list. Home is no longer just the home base we leave behind each day as we head out to work, school, or other activities—it has become the place in which many of us literally live, work, and play. It should come as no surprise that this past year has also had a huge impact on 2021 design trends.
Topping the list are 1) dedicated home office space, and 2) more delineated spaces (bye-bye open floor plans). Addressing both of those is the “cloffice”. Wait, what? Is that even a word? Well, while it may not [yet] be “Webster approved”—it’s actually a portmanteau of “closet” and “office”—“cloffice ideas” is most definitely a very popular search term that yields oodles of images and articles about a burgeoning small-space hack that gets you (or the kid(s)) away from the kitchen table while also providing a way to literally close the door on the work/school day when finished. Even if you are thinking of selling your home this year, repurposing an extra or under-utilized closet can be an inexpensive way to maximize space and help show potential buyers how the home can work for them.
