It’s hard to believe it, but the holiday season is upon us (where has this year gone?)! As our thoughts shift towards the hustle and bustle of the season, it’s easy to forget the little preventative details. Here are a few quick and easy DIY tips for helping to ensure your home is ready too.

#1 Protect Your Outdoor Faucet: The protectors are only a couple of bucks, and can save you thousands in repairs!

#2 Clean Your Gutters: Gutters are what keeps the water draining away from your foundation. If they get backed up and water seeps into your foundation, you could potentially end up with a very costly repair project.

#3 Seal Up Leaks: Yes, this can be an annual thing. Check windowsills, baseboards, fireplace, dryer vents, and basically anywhere something inside pokes a hole to the outside. These can all be addressed with a very inexpensive tube of caulking, which is available in a variety of colors to blend in with your décor.

#4 Program Your Thermostat: If you haven’t already, it’s really time to upgrade to a programmable thermostat, perhaps even a WiFi connected one that gives you the ability to adjust your thermostat remotely. Doing this can save you as much as 10% on your utility bills each year!

#5 Check Your Attic Insulation: Have you ever noticed icicles hanging from your gutters? It could be an indicator that you need more insulation in your attic. You should have at least 14 inches, and more doesn’t hurt since we can have some wickedly low temperatures during winter.
