Did you know that while driving at 55 mph, you travel the length of a football field in five seconds? If you text and drive, that is like driving the length of a football field, completely blind.Prior to opening the Rippy Agency in the Brighton Pavilions in 2013, I worked as a claims adjuster for a major insurance company for 11 years and investigated auto accidents with injury. Once I retired from claims, I was no longer investigating accidents and found myself with a unique platform to help educate teen drivers and try to prevent accidents, right here in our community.

My staff and I hit the ground running, and over the past three and a half years, we have met with dozens of classes and our community to share safe driving tips, graduated driver’s license laws and tools to help them become more alert and safe drivers. We have had thousands of teens take a pledge to “X the Txt” and not text and drive, and encourage faculty, parents and siblings to take the pledge as well. In fact, our agency intern, John Mordecai, was a freshman in Sue Cochran’s Health and Safety Class at Brighton High School back in 2014 when we visited the school and he took the pledge to not text and drive.

On February 28th, I returned to Brighton High School to continue our Safe Driving Education with over 280 students, but this time John was by my side as my co-instructor. As part of our education platform, we also have a real vehicle that was crashed from a distracted driving loss. We use this very demonstrative exhibit on the campus itself and coincide the crashed car with the day of our classes to help the students #gettheresafe.
