bigstock-cellphones-3659470Recycling an old cell phone is as easy as tossing it in the recycling bin at Office Depot, Best Buy, or any number of collection facilities. But why not make your old phone a “gift” to a cause that’s dear to your heart? Recycling is always a smart idea, but recycling from the heart is even better. Here are three areas where used cell phones are changing – and saving lives:

Helping Battered Women:
The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence partners with cellular recycler for the collection of used cell phones. A portion of the monies that come from the sale of these phones supports their programming. With a donated phone, a domestic violence victim (or a potential victim) can call 911 in an emergency.

Most cell phones are programmed to call 911, regardless of whether the user has purchased a service plan or not. Hope line from Verizon is another national program aimed at providing support services to domestic violence victims. You can drop off your old phone at a Verizon store, make sure to tell them to donate it to Hope Line. http://www.ncadv.org/takeaction/donateaphone.php.

Helping The Troops:
Keeping soldiers connected to loved ones is the goal of Cell Phones for Soldiers. Donated cell phones are turned over to ReCellular, the nation’s largest recycling/reseller of cell phones. In turn, ReCellular pays $5 to Cell Phones for Soldiers for each phone. The funds provide prepaid phone cards that are sent to service members. Get details and even request free talk time for a specific military member at this website: http://www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com.

Helping The Elderly:
Secure The Call is another charity that provides free 911 emergency only cell phones to Senior Citizen Centers and other needy organizations. After they collect the phones, volunteers prepare them to be reused by seniors and domestic abuse victims so they can quickly summon emergency services if the need arises. http://www.securethecall.org.
