Dad was a carpenter for the majority of his life and a very handy guy around the house. I leaned on him for 41 years for the answers to questions like, “Why isn’t my dishwasher powering on, Dad?” As he always would, he encouraged me to work through the basics, follow the power cord and make sure it was fully plugged in. Sure enough, it had become slightly dislodged under the cabinet and when I plugged it back in, I heard the power turn on. I said to Dad, “It worked!” He replied, “Awesome! That will be $75 dollars.” We both laughed and the dishes got clean.

Since Dad passed away, the dishwasher will occasionally power off now and then. Every time I trace the cord to re-plug it in and power back up, I can still hear Dad say, “That will be $75 dollars” and I will smile.

I miss my dad more than anything in this world. The loss of one of my parents has stammered me with grief like I have never felt, so I find refuge in small moments that can still make me smile when I think of him. A friend told me memories are stored on a cellular level and that my dad will always be with me. I love that.

Congratulations to 2018 BHS graduate, Christina Sanchez, the Rippy Agency’s 5th Annual $1,000 scholarship recipient. She will be the first in her family to attend college.
