Sports injuries are now the second most leading cause for doctor’s visits, with a growing number due to activities of a “Weekend Warrior.” With busy and demanding weekday schedules, it’s no surprise that the majority of individuals save heavy activity or house work for the weekend. Without the benefit of slow daily training, people often forget that they are not conditioned to perform the activities that they enjoy. So what happens? They overdo it and shock their bodies!
Q: What kind of injuries are we talking about?
A: Overuse injuries that lead to– Tennis Elbow, Rotator Cuff Injuries/Tears, Low Back Pain, Neck Pain, Achilles Tendonitis, Ankle Sprains, Plantar Fasciitis, Shin Splints, Knee Pain/Injury
Q: Well, I should be safe because I like to spend my weekends gardening in the sunshine, right?
A: Consider how much time you spend hunched over or kneeling on the ground with various tools and equipment. Gardening and house chores absolutely fall into the “Weekend Warrior” category! How can you avoid these injuries? Simple answer: common-sense prevention! Exercising regularly while gradually increasing your intensity level, with a mixture of cardiovascular activity, stretching and weightlifting help prevent overuse injuries. Allow yourself time to warm-up and stretch; not only does it feel good, but it helps prevent sprains and strains. Use proper technique in each activity, being conscientious of allowing yourself to stop when you are fatigued. Check the gear and equipment you are using. Are your shoes, clubs, tools, racquet, etc. appropriate for your activity and are they in good condition to help your body perform at its fullest potential?
I salute all you Weekend Warriors and gardening gurus! Enjoy this wonderful time of the year when the sun likes to make an appearance. Stay hydrated, stay mobile, and stay smart! Most of all, HAVE FUN!!!
