children-531282_1920The obesity epidemic continues to spread around the world. It has spread to all corners of the globe, and even spread to our children. There are many different causes for the epidemic. These range
from genetics to increased availability of high-calorie, nutrient-poor foods. One of the biggest culprits in young children is the increased intake of juice and other sugary drinks.

We know that children who become overweight and obese at a young age are at very high risk of staying this way or getting worse as adolescents and adults. This puts them at risk for a wide variety of illnesses including heart disease, diabetes, and joint problems. Juice and other sugar-filled drinks have very few nutrients and lots of calories. They also have very high sugar content and increase the risk of cavities, especially if kids drink them at night.

Pediatricians and dentists hate juice. There is no good or healthy juice. It is best thought of as a candy bar, a treat to be enjoyed rarely. Children older than 1 year old only need milk and water to drink. The best method to wean your child off juice is not to buy any at the store.
