November, wow, how did THAT happen already? During this time of year we tend to get caught up in the seasonal frenzy and it’s easy to overlook things. Here are a few basic safety reminders to help get your home ready.
Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they are in good working condition. If the batteries haven’t been changed in the past six months, this is a great time to do so. It is highly recommended to change them when changing clocks for Daylight Savings Time.
Never connect more than one extension cord together; get one that is long enough to reach the outlet without tangling or becoming a tripping hazard.
Only use light strings certified by an accredited certification organization (CSA International, UL, or ELT) so you know they comply with applicable safety and performance standards.
Inspect light strings for frayed cords, exposed wires, cracked bulb holders, or loose connections before installing, and be sure to replace non-working bulbs with the correct wattage.
Keep electrical connectors off the ground and away from metal rain gutters when installing outdoor lighting, and use insulated tape or plastic clips instead of metal nails or tacks to hold them in place.
Turn holiday lights off when your home is unattended or you go to bed.
I want to wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving. Hopefully the holidays are a time of joy and blessings that you are able to share with your loved ones. For those who can find the holiday season difficult, I wish you comfort and strength, and the hope that you are able to find peace and better days ahead.
