Simple physics dictate that there’s only just so much storage space in a home right? Well, not so fast. Recent design trends have taken “getting creative with storage” to new heights and done it in a way that can not only add space, but also increase the charm and appeal of your home without breaking the bank. Even better, if you’re handy, they can be pretty straight forward DIY projects.
“Between-studs storage niches” appear to be one of the hot design trends of 2018, and with a little ingenuity and an eye for aesthetics, they can be implemented in just about any area, for a variety of clever uses. Depending upon how you decide to do it, once installed, these niches can appear to be nothing more than an accenting wall panel, open as a recessed niche, or even completely disguised as wainscoting.
In a pantry, hallway, or laundry room, think about a dedicated “hidden” closet for brooms and mops, your Swiffer, etc. In a bathroom, it might be a great place to stash toiletry items, towels, toilet paper, medications, etc. In a bedroom or living room, it could become a small knick-knack or book shelf. While in the kitchen, it might be a new home for glassware, wine bottles, cookbooks, spices, or perhaps a new home for your decorative dry food storage canisters to get them off your countertop.
Whichever way you go, concealed, open, or disguised, this quick and easy hack could be a fun and helpful way to break up a flat wall and add an interesting design feature to just about any room in your home. As with most things, it’s best to ask an expert first to make sure that the space you are considering is safe for the intended use.
