A very common misconception about hearing loss is that a person must be completely unable to hear, or deaf, before they need to get hearing aids. However, the majority of hearing aid wearers can hear many sounds and noises without hearing aids or other assistance. A very typical statement I hear from patients is similar to this: “I can hear, I just can’t understand, especially when there is noise.”

Some people may have normal hearing in one frequency range while having a hearing loss in another frequency range. Being able to hear, but not understand is very common, and is typically due to a loss of hearing in the high frequency range. Hearing loss in any given range or at any frequency can be categorized as mild, moderate, moderately-severe, severe or profound. Hearing loss can be permanent or temporary.

The causes of permanent hearing loss can vary and include congenital issues, disease, illness, noise exposure and ototoxic medications. Temporary hearing loss can be caused by congestion, fluid in the middle ear, or even ear wax. The only way to really know why a person cannot hear or understand, and what treatment options are available, begins with having a comprehensive hearing exam.

Hearing aids are the preferred treatment method for the majority of types of hearing loss, while some causes can be resolved with medical or surgical intervention. The highest level of fitting success happens when an individual treats hearing loss sooner rather than later, because treating it sooner diminishes the likelihood of changes in the brain that can negatively affect hearing and understanding, especially in noise.

At Blue Ribbon Hearing & Tinnitus Center we offer a comprehensive exam that includes speech-in-noise testing to determine the best options to help individuals hear AND understand to their fullest potential. We also have every type and style of daily wear hearing aids available and specialize in custom fittings, not just selling devices.
