It doesn’t seem possible, but every year summer begins to wind down, and school days sneak back onto the calendar. With the end of summer also comes a second peak in the real estate market. That time period between the first day of school and Halloween is when many people put their house on the market, hoping to get the transaction closed before the holidays.

Here are 5 ways to put your home’s best foot forward this fall:

First Impressions
First impressions matter, and the first impression your home makes is with curb appeal. Keep the grass green and the lawn mowed. Add seasonal pops of color to your entry way in flower baskets and pots. Trim back trees and bushes. Clear out any cobwebs and dust in the corners of the entry way.

The Front Door
The next thing your buyer will experience is the entry into your home. Avoid squeaky doors and make sure the house smells fresh and welcoming. Remove clutter and paperwork. Make it as easy as possible for someone coming into the house to imagine it is their next home.

What’s Cookin’
The kitchen is one of the big selling points of any home. Ensure all the appliances are working properly, clean, and the countertops are open. Since we tend to collect appliances like Instant Pots and coffee makers, be sure your kitchen is as organized as possible – including cabinets! Make sure you have only what you need in your kitchen, so it affords as much space for the buyer as possible.

Make It Personal
Potential buyers walk into every home and wonder what it would be like to live there. Make it easier for them by removing some of the personal pictures on the walls and on shelves. It may seem silly, but when buyers see the current owner in the home, it’s harder for them to imagine living there.

Protect Yourself
It’s also a good idea to remove any of your personal valuables (such as jewelry and heirlooms) from the property during showings and open houses. There are stories all over about these special items coming up missing while the house is for sale. Protect yourself and your property by keeping them in a safe place while others are in your home.
