Offered by Kim Gieseke – Promenade Horsemanship Academy

About three years into instructing students at Promenade, I had a few parents ask me about what their students could do with the horsemanship skills they had acquired. My goal became finding an equine activity that helped individual growth but inspired team spirit. That is when I decided to start a youth drill team. An equestrian drill team is a group of horses and riders performing choreographed maneuvers to music. Teams typically perform at rodeos, horse fairs, parades, benefits, or drill team competitions. Drill teams are intended to entertain, show sportsmanship, horsemanship, teamwork and dedication.

Drill has provided all of this and more. We are now starting our 4th drill team. The growth in confidence that I have seen in the students and the comradery among the teams has been phenomenal. Students that barely speak when they start lessons end up shouting out commands that one can hear across a 300 foot arena. The encouragement and mentoring that goes on between experienced and new members warms your heart. These skills spill over into all areas of life as grandparents and parents let me know and emails that teachers send.

Our teams include both youth and adults. We meet year round once or twice a week. You only need to have the basic skills of walking, trotting and stopping and we can teach you the rest. We are looking for adults and youth who have a passion for horses and enjoy being part of a team. We even provide horses if you don’t own one! Promenade invites you to join our horse community and have some fun with the sport of drill team riding!
