Staying home during a pandemic is the perfect time to figure out what makes your home more functional, more enjoyable, and more conducive to your family’s overall health and well-being. The Home Improvement Research Institute (HIRI) in partnership with The Farnsworth Group has been conducting national research monitoring industry and consumer trends. Not surprising, with extra time on our hands, internet searches related to DIY projects through Home Depot and Lowe’s are up 150-195%, and two-thirds of survey respondents started DIY projects in April.
Also not surprising, painting (sales were up approximately 700%) and, of course, spring planting and lawn care topped the list, followed closely by projects related to making patios, porches, and backyards more usable and enjoyable. While the DIY market saw increases, the commercial contractor side of home improvement did see some fluctuation. According to the HIRI/Farnsworth surveys, respondents cited a variety of factors influencing the fluctuations on contracted projects, including sensitivity to price and income stability, as well as concerns over having strangers in one’s home and potential exposure.
Lower on the list, but still worth noting, consumers focused a lot on spring cleaning—sorting and clearing out old/unused items, some as part of an annual ritual, while others in pursuit of more minimalistic goals to give a more light and airy feel to existing space.
